Temporary changes to airport security

A temporary x-ray line will be in operation at the Isle of Man Airport for the next week while equipment designed to improve the flow of passengers through security is installed.

The installation process will take approximately seven days with the temporary line operational from Friday 19 October until Friday 26 October.

Passengers are warned there may be some delays to the security procedure during this time and are encouraged to arrive in plenty of time.

When one of the new machines is operational, staff will be able to begin training and become familiarised with the new equipment.

After the training is completed, it is expected that two security lines will be staffed each day. Successful trials in recent weeks have seen two lines staffed during busy periods. The aim is to provide a service whereby passengers can clear security within 10 minutes.

While the work takes place, the following advice has been issued to help the process run smoothly and reduce the time spent at security.

Passengers are encouraged to carefully pack bags at home and carry only essential items in hand luggage, with liquids and gels placed in the clear sealable bag.

When flying from Isle of Man and UK airports:

  • Liquids, gels and pastes should be packed into hold baggage where possible. If carried in hand luggage, they should be in containers that hold 100ml or less, and packed into a sealed, clear plastic bag (maximum 1 litre capacity) which must be placed in the tray at security.
  • Food or powders should be packed into hold baggage where possible. Although these items are permitted in hand luggage, they can obstruct images on the x-ray machine, or may be mistaken for suspicious items – so putting them in the hold will help reduce the need for additional checks. Passengers who need to take these items on board should therefore allow extra time at security
  • Sharp items and tools cannot be carried in hand luggage at all
  • Large electrical items such as laptops or tablets can be taken into the cabin, but must be removed from hand luggage at the search area and placed in the tray
