Private Fostering Awareness Day: Are you caring for someone else’s child?

Private Fostering Awareness Day is on 4 November 2026, and Manx Care’s Children and Families Service is sharing information to increase understanding of what a private fostering arrangement is and who to contact for support.

What private fostering arrangements are

Private fostering is when a child under 16, or a disabled child under 18 years of age, is cared for by someone who is not a close relative for 28 days or more. This could be a family friend, neighbour or the parent of a child’s friend.

These arrangements can arise for many reasons, such as a parent experiencing chronic ill health or a change in family circumstances that means a child temporarily needs to live elsewhere.

Support that can be offered

The Children and Families Service is there to make sure private fostering arrangements are safe, supportive and meet the needs of the child.

Private foster carers and parents involved in private fostering arrangements will receive advice, guidance and help in understanding what they need to do to ensure a child is happy and well cared for.

Where to seek support and guidance

Parents, private carers and professionals working in places like schools, health services, faith groups or community settings who believe a private fostering arrangement may be in place must notify Manx Care Children and Families Service for information, support and advice.

Anyone looking after someone else’s child, or unsure whether a situation is private fostering can call +44 1624 686179 or email childcarereferrals.dhsc@gov.im.
